Wayne County Author, John W. Musselman’s Undaunted They Flew

Wayne County author, John W. Musselman, upon the early passing of his father Flight Lieutenant H.J. Musselman, RCAF, DFC was bequeathed his WWII pilot logbook. Reading the personalized comments next to each mission entry he began a journey of discovery into the kind of man his father had been.

Spurring a nineteen-year pursuit of information and research assembled from a vast amounts of resources including first-hand accounts from RAF Bomber Command veterans, records at the National Archives Kew Gardens, military service records, visiting several RAF Museums, W/Op and MUG logbook entries, career travels, and personal life experiences provided him a unique insight on the subject.

Culminating in ‘Undaunted They Flew’ a compelling fact-based account about the WWII exploits of seven intrepid young men in their quest to become a heavy bomber crew in RAF Bomber Command 1944-1945. The newly formed crew survive their perilous training regimen and attain their goal to fly the venerable Lancaster bomber getting posted to 166 Squadron, RAF Kirmington, Lincolnshire. After ten operations they are allocated an aircraft of their own, Serial No. ME746, AS-R2, nicknamed ‘Roger Squared’, changing their lives forever. Initially, the crew, full of youthful bravado and naivete are forced to face their fears. Exposed to the stark reality of being an aircrew in Bomber Command their very existence is at stake. The only thing keeping them alive seems to be an abundance of good luck, a guardian angel, their wits, and trust in each other to complete another sortie toward tour expiry. Their constant prayer—TO NOT FAIL THEIR MATES.
