WCPS Announces New Southern Wayne High Principal

Goldsboro, N.C. – During its monthly meeting this week, the Wayne County Board of Education approved the following principal hire:Wilson County Schools assistant principal, Kelly Carter, was named the principal of Southern Wayne High.


She is replacing Karen Rogers, who resigned this spring.“Ms. Carter brings with her 24 years of teaching and administrative experience that will benefit the students and staff at Southern Wayne High,” states Dr. Marc Whichard, WCPS superintendent. “Her experience as an instructional leader, her ability to build relationships with students and staff, and her military background will be invaluable in her efforts to continue building upon the great work and academic efforts underway at the school.”Ms. Carter began her education career as a high school math teacher with Johnston County Schools in 2000. In 2003, she transitioned to Wayne County Public Schools and taught math for 13 years at Charles B. Aycock High. In 2016, Ms. Carter transitioned to school administration.


She has spent the last eight years as both a high school and middle school assistant principal with Wilson County Schools. Prior to entering the education field, Ms. Carter served in the United States Air Force. Ms. Carter holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a master’s degree in school administration. She also holds a licensure as a Curriculum Instructional Specialist.Dr. Whichard met with and informed the Southern Wayne High staff about the hire on Friday, May 10. The official start date for Ms. Carter is July 1.
